Wi-Fi Speed Check: Plan vs What You Actually Get

A tidy workbench with an open PC tower, neatly organised cables and a softly glowing monitor, cool steel blue-grey tones in a calm workshop — fixing and speeding up a PC guide

Paying for 300 Mbps and seeing 60 on the speed test is normal enough to confuse everyone. This check compares what you pay for against an honest speed test result and interprets the gap instead of leaving you to guess. The numbers matter in context: over Wi-Fi, 70% of your plan is genuinely fine, while 30% means something real is wrong. The verdict weighs your router's age and how many devices share the network, then tells you the honest test order — wired first, then next to the router, then where you actually sit — so you know whether the fix is a router, a mesh point, or a conversation with your provider.

Compare the internet speed you pay for with what your PC actually receives, and see whether the gap is your router, your placement or your plan.

❓ Wi-Fi Speed Check: Plan vs What You Actually Get — FAQ

What percentage of my plan speed should Wi-Fi deliver?

Over Wi-Fi, anywhere above roughly 70% of your plan is a healthy result — walls, distance and neighbours all cost real throughput. Below 50% something is worth fixing; the test order in the tool tells you whether it is placement, router age or the plan itself.

Does an old router really cap my speed?

Yes. A router five or more years old may physically cap out below your plan, especially on Wi-Fi, even when the cable into it is fine. If a wired test is fast but Wi-Fi is slow and the router is old, the router is the honest culprit.

Why is my Wi-Fi slow when I pay for a fast plan?

Three usual reasons: distance and walls (placement), an old router, or too many devices sharing the same airtime. The tool asks for all three so the verdict points at the real one instead of telling you to upgrade a plan that was never the problem.
